Self-directed learning

Self-directed learning: Building confidence, curiosity and lifelong skills at BIS

In today’s rapidly changing world, the ability to direct one’s own learning is more important than ever. At BiS, self-directed learning (SDL) is not just a concept—it is embedded in our pedagogy, shaping how our students approach challenges, acquire new skills and build confidence in their abilities.

What is Self-Directed Learning?

Self-directed learning is the ability to take initiative in one’s education, set goals, manage resources, and adapt to challenges—all while being motivated by curiosity and a genuine desire to learn. Unlike traditional models of education that rely on passive information absorption, SDL places students in the driver’s seat, allowing them to take ownership of their learning journey.

Why Does It Matter?

Research shows that self-directed learners develop a strong sense of self-efficacy—the belief in their own ability to achieve goals. This belief, a concept studied extensively by psychologist Albert Bandura, plays a crucial role in academic success, emotional resilience, and lifelong learning habits. When students trust their capacity to learn, they become more willing to take on new challenges, persist through difficulties and develop a mindset of continuous growth.

How We Foster Self-Directed Learning at BiS

At BiS, we intentionally cultivate self-directed learning opportunities and skills from an early age by creating environments where students can:

  • Explore their curiosity – We provide opportunities for students to investigate topics that spark their interest, helping them see learning as an exciting journey rather than a fixed curriculum.
  • Set their own goals – Whether in OMNI Week or everyday classroom learning, students are encouraged to identify what they want to achieve and outline the steps to get there.
  • Manage resources and problem-solve – Through hands-on, project-based learning, students learn how to seek out tools, information and support when needed.
  • Develop metacognition – We teach students to think about their thinking—reflecting on their learning process, recognising challenges and adjusting their approach when needed.

OMNI: A Supercharged SDL Experience

OMNI Week is a perfect example of SDL in action. Students transition from skill acquisition to fully immersing themselves in projects where they must plan, adapt, and problem-solve independently. They learn when to push through challenges and when to ask for help—both essential skills for lifelong learning.

Beyond the Classroom: Preparing for Life

Self-directed learning is not just about academic success—it prepares students for the real world. In workplaces and daily life, the ability to navigate uncertainty, set personal learning goals and collaborate effectively is invaluable. BiS students develop these skills early, ensuring they are prepared for whatever the future holds.

At BiS, we believe that fostering self-directed learners is one of the most impactful things we can do. By giving students the tools to manage their own learning, we empower them to become confident, adaptable and lifelong learners.
