Bistopia: A vision for real world learning
What is BiStopia?
BiStopia is Brisbane Independent School’s (BiS) twice-yearly student-led micro-society where learners collaboratively build a functioning world from scratch. It’s a vibrant living classroom where students engage in governance, economics, ethics and social systems—all designed and run by them. In week 6 of Terms 2 and 4, the school transforms into this immersive society, offering every student a unique opportunity to live their learning.
How It Works
In BiStopia 2025, students were required to open businesses—but with a twist. Under Mayor Maverick’s executive orders, product development and sales were not available business options this term. Instead, all businesses had to deliver on strict certification criteria:
- Create a service or experience
- Embrace social or sustainable entrepreneurship
- Maximise customer value
This year’s theme of social and sustainable entrepreneurship encouraged students to think beyond profit. Business plans had to be submitted, approved and aligned with values that put people and the planet first.
A school-wide currency — BiSMarks — fueled the economy. The elected student government set policies while younger students contributed essential services like post offices, vet clinics, hospitals and museums. Older students tackled more complex solo ventures, adapting their original ideas to fit the new guidelines.
Creative ventures and sustainable innovation
This year’s student-run businesses reflected a stunning range of creativity and purpose. From escape rooms and puppet shows to musical interludes and digital art tutorials, each business was designed not just to entertain or engage but to align with BIStopia’s sustainability values. Highlights included:
- Final Escape: an escape room experience
- A Peek into the Future: fortune telling
- Burried: a scavenger hunt experience
- The Viaan Show: a student-led comedy show
- Digital Drawings: pre-recorded drawing tutorials
- Tune and Song: a musical reprieve for weary wanderers
- Lucky Dip Bowling: a twist on the classic carnival game
All businesses were assessed on their ability to meet specific environmental criteria: use of recyclable materials, plastic-free operations and a low carbon footprint. These requirements challenged students to think innovatively about how to deliver meaningful experiences that are also sustainable.
Connection to educational theory
BiStopia is deeply grounded in experiential learning theory, particularly David Kolb’s framework, where students learn through concrete experience, reflection and active experimentation. But it also draws from developmental psychology, ethics and social learning theory. Students face authentic challenges that require negotiation, critical thinking and personal reflection.
Importantly, BiStopia offers a rare window into moral development. Students engage in passionate conversations about fairness, justice, law and community. Younger learners question the boundaries of kindness and right versus wrong. Older students grapple with ethical trade-offs and deeper social implications. This intellectual and emotional terrain is as rich as any academic lesson.
